Technical Tours

Kindly note that all technical tours will take place at venues provided by the hosting institutions. Delegates will be transported to the venues and back to the CTICC. Delegates are requested to:
    • – Register and pay the costs of the tours they would like to attend. For those who have already registered for the conference, you can add tours via the option to edit your registration options – participation is only guaranteed once payment has been received;
    • – Assemble at the CTICC departure points at least 30 minutes prior to the indicated departure time. Unfortunately, private transport cannot be accommodated at the venues;
    • – Sign the necessary attendance registers;
    • – Wear their conference identification lanyards throughout the tour;
    • – Ensure they are well equipped for the trip e.g. warm jacket, comfortable shoes, water etc.

Host: South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI)

Venue limitations: Venue is on 2nd floor with no lift access, the venue is therefore unfortunately not wheelchair friendly.

Title: Maps: Communicating Vital Information to Policy Makers

Details: Maps are more than just illustrations that help you navigate from point A to point B. There are powerful tools that allows user to visualise data, see trends and spur decision-makers into action. The SANBI team will showcase how the use of maps in the National Biodiversity Assessment has been used to visualise trends, spur conservation interventions, and help shape national policy. The SANBI team hopes that their presentations will engage attendees and stimulate conversation on best practices.

Title: Chief Directorate: National Geospatial Information, operational outputs

Details: The technical tour showcases historic survey instruments and computing equipment that were used to establish and maintain South Africa’s national control survey system and national mapping series, TRIGNET (South Africa’s CORS Network), Aerial Triangulation and Digital Elevation Capture (ATEC), 1:50 000 Topographical Compilation and small and medium scale mapping.

Title: GMES & Africa: Marine and Coastal Operations for Southern Africa and the Indian Ocean

Details: The MarCOSIO project focuses on the use of earth observation science, to develop products and services to promote the sustainable use of marine and coastal resources and governance across the Southern Africa and Indian Ocean regions. This technical tour will showcase digital decision support tools and data products in the following domains: Fisheries and aquaculture, marine and maritime services, coastal monitoring.

Title: Geospatial Datasets for a 3D City Model of Cape Town

Details: The City of Cape Town’s Geospatial Unit is continuously striving towards a future 3D City Model. The Unit’s active acquisition, research and development of 3D data and tools, to support this vision will be presented.

Details: The technical tour will comprise of an overview presentation regarding the work of the SA Navy Hydrographic Office, which include the production of navigation charts and a tour of the facilities
